The painting "Emma's Gaze" was created by Dr. Ian Penn at the request, in May 2007, of composer Lloyd Burritt to capture on canvas Ian's artistic interpretation of Lloyd's opera The Dream Healer. Ian had access to the composer and to librettist Don Mowatt, to the opera libretto and to the book PILGRIM, by Timothy Findley. The painting was created prior to the premiere.

"Emma's Gaze" will be part of a showing of art created by students, residents, alumni and faculty from UBC Medicine and Dentistry.
Saturday, January 26, 2008 from 2 - 7 pm (wine and cheese and live music from 4 - 6 pm) and Sunday January 27, 2008 from 11 am - 5 pm. 2750 Heather Street, Vancouver, William A. Webber Medical Student & Alumni Centre, VHG.

Dr. Ian Penn is an artist, and cardiologist. He has spent over 20 years developing coronary stents, initiating and implementing a Canadian trials group that investigated their safety and efficacy in the early 90's. He was Director of Interventional Cardiology at VGH, and UBC as well as Head of the Cardiac Cath. He is an inventor, and holds numerous patents. He is currently retired from clinical practice and is a 3rd year student at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design.
