Robert Gardiner is Professor of Design in the Theatre Program at UBC, and has designed scenery and/or lighting at numerous theatres, including the Arts Club (Vancouver), Charlotte Martin (Seattle), Organic (Chicago), and Centaur (Montreal). His designs have been included in a number of exhibitions, and have received several Jesse Richardson Awards. His artistic practice participates in the conversation between imagistic design and the creation of new English-language theatre, particularly investigating the role of interactive technologies in live performance.
Robert Gardiner is Professor of Design in the Theatre Program at UBC, and has designed
scenery and/or lighting at numerous theatres, including the Arts Club (Vancouver), Charlotte Martin
(Seattle), Organic (Chicago), Belfry (Victoria), Gateway (Richmond), and Centaur (Montreal).
He has also worked as a director, technical director, stage carpenter, scenic artist, and actor. His designs
have been included in a number of exhibitions, including the Canadian National Exhibit at the Prague
Quadrennial in 1998, and have received several Jesse Richardson Awards.
He's a former board
member of Associated Designers of Canada, and a member of both the United States and the
Canadian Institutes of Theatre Technology. His artistic practice participates in the conversation
between imagistic design and the creation of new English-language theatre, particularly investigating
the role of interactive technologies in live performance. He has also an ongoing involvement with arts
and culture policy and development for western Canada.
