This page outlines the key milestones in the development of the opera and key promotional activities leading up to the premiere in March 2008. Burritt commenced work on the opera in January 2000.

Première performances of The DREAM HEALER at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, University of British Columbia, Vancouver Canada, were presented by the UBC Opera Ensemble and Theatre UBC with support from UBC Department of Psychiatry and the UBC Institute of Mental Health.

The cast included John Avey, baritone, as Carl Jung, Judith Forst, mezzo-soprano, as Lady Sybil and Roelof Oostwoud, tenor, as Pilgrim. The UBC Opera Ensemble and UBC Symphony Orchestra were conducted by David Agler. Nancy Hermiston, Head, Voice and Opera Divisions, UBC, was the director with sets by Robert Gardiner, costumes by Alison Green, and lighting by Jeremy Baxter.

Composer Lloyd Burritt, with business manager Stan Holman, introduced The Dream Healer to a Kamloops audience at the Kamloops Art Gallery. Burritt reviewed the creative journey and presented four arias. The evening was moderated by Dr. Janet Kusler. More information.

A soiree at the home of Lloyd Burritt, composer, and Stan Holman initiates a series of "Friends of The Dream Healer Preview Performances" to be held prior to the premiere of the opera in 2008.

The evening opened with a performance by guest artist Harold Brown, pianist, and introductions by Lloyd Burritt, Don Mowatt and Stan Holman. Excerpts from The Dream Healer were then presented in a unique and original format: dramatic readings from the opera libretto alternated with sung selections from the opera. Featured performers in the singing roles: Richard Williams, baritone, as Carl Jung, and Ingrid Mankhof, soprano, as Emma Jung; accompanist, David Boothroyd. Featured performers of the dramatic readings were Don Mowatt, the librettist of The Dream Healer, who prepared the selections from the text and performed the roles of Jung and Pilgrim, and Carolyn Finlay, actor and musician, as Emma Jung.

July 2006

An agreement is forged to celebrate UBC's 100th anniversary and The Chan Centre's 10th anniversary with the premiere of The Dream Healer at The Chan Centre in March of 2008 in conjunction with UBC's Opera Division and Department of Psychiatry, the UBC Institute of Mental Health and The Chan Center for the Performing Arts at UBC.

Public fundraising begins through the UBC Development Office.

May 2006

Revised libretto and score completed.

Don Mowatt joins the project to provide additional material to the libretto.

Completed the third recording (second re-write of Act One and the first draft of Act two) Featuring Sara Fryer, mezzo-soprano. The reading was held for a group of invited directors, producers and conductors. Other performers included: Peter Butterfield, Tenor; Steve Maddock, Baritone; Sara Vardy, Soprano; Melanie Krueger, Coloratura; George Roberts, Baritone; Fabiana Katz , Mezzo-soprono; Troy Topnik, Tenor; and David Boothroyd, piano.
